Twilight's Destiny by PluckyNinja Twilight's Destiny by PluckyNinja
So, there was one more thing about the season finale that I forgot to mention in my initial reaction blog post (found here: [link]), which didn't quite pass the sniff test but it took a little longer to sink in. I figured the most effective (and entertaining) way to describe the problem would be via a comic, so here you go.

Basically, the second half of the episode more or less negates the message of the first half, and that kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe I'm not giving the writers enough credit, since for all I know this could be a very important part of the supposed Princess Twilight three episode arc that Meghan McCarthy mentioned, however at this point, I can only really judge the season finale as a single episode.

SPECIAL THANKS: Deviant BeltedYapper suggested the song "Free Will" by Rush as a companion to this comic. It even mentions Celestia (sort of)! Listen to it here: [link]

Twilight is probably thinking
" Great. Now I'm an even worse Mary Sue! "
Alicorn princess?
Student of Celestia?
Her brother is captain of the royal guard and is married to another princess, who happens to be a crystal pony?
UMM I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU GUYS, but if Twilight gets any more extra crap stacked onto her, she'll become a full blown Mary Sue!

mary sue is a character with no personality and all like: yay! I´m perfect, everything´s perfect! I´m beautiful! let´s sing a little happy and wonderful song! *ahem* Aurora from Sleeping Beauty *ahem* just because Twilight has a perfect life doesn´t mean she herself is perfect, she´s paranoid and full of problems, she´s not like other princesses seen before

It appeared that Twilight was excited for what Celestia had planned.

Because this face totally says "Do not want": derpicdn.net/img/view/2013/4/2…

And Twilight seems satisfied with her transformation now^^

I agree with you; one person actually said Celestia was manipulating Twilight, but I don't think that's true; I think Twilight understands that Celestia is doing what she thinks is best for her favorite student, and is able to understand her teacher's intentions even if her actions may seem questionable (to a lot of fans, at least).

Very true! I'm not against the idea of Twilight becoming an alicorn princess, but I find this unfair that Celestia just turned her into an alicorn, without asking, even without talking. That's your destiny, Twilight, deal with it! And no, there are no books about being a princess. We will figure it out "later".
+ your comic is great!

It seems like the biggest problem of the episode is that the focus and structuring made the whole ordeal feel lackluster which made the concepts presented in this (awesome) comic feel more flawed and contrived.

However, in the spirit of Lauren Faust, I'd like to share what might have been considered a "better" episode based on "fixing the flaws" (quotes are there for a reason):

In the alternate timeline I'm working on, Celestia edited out all the dangerous or unfinished spells before she sent Starswirl's journal to Twilight. Knowledge of the spell that turned Celestia and Luna into Alicorns went to the grave with Starswirl.
I had the idea of him being their father. The future princesses were born mortal and were changed to free all the unicorns from having to use their energy to raise and set the sun every day, which allowed them to focus their attention on advancing the study and understanding of magic. Starswirl never intended for his daughters to become the rulers of Equestria.

The citizens likely came to hold their heroes in high regard for all the good they did, like stopping Discord. Seems to me that in the wake of Discord's defeat, the land would be a mess and the tribes might have started fighting over how to set things up. Celestia and Luna might have ended up taking over to prevent a costly three-way civil war.

Not sure how well this all really works. I would appreciate opinions, thoughts, and ideas.

Now that I think about events that happened before becoming an alicorn do seem a bit convenient to happen.
The only way I can think of to break Celestia's manipulations of destiny is with this  dc.wikia.com/wiki/Ion_(New_Ear…
Also the whole immortal princess has been making me wonder on how to you can make Twilight mortal again, what are your ideas.

Bingo. I love this comic, spot-on critique. That episode was not just half-baked and poorly written, but it was also ideologically crooked.

My own belief on free will is that there is no such thing, but it's more complex than that. I'm working on a comic right now that makes Twilight's coronation into a sort of occultist, dark pony instrumentality.

...Celestia didn't turn her into an Alicorn. the unfinished Starswirl spell did. People seem the think that was the cure. that's not true though, the song was.
Twilight ascended herself where Starswirl failed to do so.
Or I could just paraphrase everything wanderingbishop said. He nailed it.

Although Twilight did ascend due to Starswirls spell, Celestia would have to approve of it anyway. Besides, she STOLE Starswirls work!

I was thinking this exact same thing at the end of that episode. Like

"OK she's going to be an alicorn, fine, it's inevitable. But couldn't Celestia at least ask permission first?!"

No means no Celestia

I had a dream like that! I dreamt Twilight didn't want to be a Princess any more, so she used this seal to turn back into a Unicorn. When she stepped on the seal again, she became a Princess again. Then, Celestia randomly showed up and said: "You're going to be an Alicorn, and you will like it!" It was weird...

I wouldn't go as far as saying Celestia forced this on Twilight, but recently it's been bothering me how Twilight never wanted to be a Princess before, then accepted being one without putting any thought into whether it's what she truly wants. So far, even G3's Princess Promenade did WAY better in this regard (never thought I'd say that): pinkiepony.tumblr.com/post/615… . The only good reason I can think of as to why Twilight would do this is she's afraid of disappointing Princess Celestia, a fear we've seen before in Crystal Empire and Lesson Zero.

Even in Equestria Girls, she's uncomfortable being a Princess, Rarity tries to encourage her to embrace it (seems like Rarity actually would like to be one, why not make her a Princess?), Twilight worries Celestia will expect her to rule a kingdom of her own one day because she thinks she won't be a good leader, seeming to imply she'd go with it anyway should that happen, and this worry is reassured with her becoming more confident in her ability to be a good leader, and a little more comfortable in her new role as a Princess. If she truly wanted this, why would she be uncomfortable as a Princess and have to adjust?

She still doesn't question whether being one is what she truly wants. Will she ever do that? I don't know. I like everything else about Twilicorn. I'm not worried about balance issues or Mary Sue-ness. I love that she earned her title, I believe she's qualified, at least in terms of character traits, she'll still need to learn how to do the job. The earning was there, but not the wanting. It feels to me like both are needed for this to really be awesome.
